It experienced several renovations in 1569, 1587, and was finally reconstructed in 1744, with its current design still visible today. The monastery complex features an active temple built upon ancient ruins, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from its elevated position. As a living testament to the area’s rich history, it remains a site of Buddhist worship and pilgrimage.
- Wat Phra Sri Sanphet - Wat Phra Si Sanphet Temple was regarded as the most sacred in ancient Ayutthaya. The temple was reserved for royal ceremonies until its destruction by the Burmese in 1767. It continues to captivate visitors with its royal magnificence and grandeur.
- Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit - Viharn Phra Mongkol Bophit is a spacious assembly hall that houses the Phra Mongkhon Bophit, one of Thailand’s largest bronze Buddha statues, sculpted in 1538. The term “Viharn” denotes an assembly hall in a Buddhist temple, while “Phra Mongkol Bophit” is the name of the Buddha statue it contains. The statue was relocated and preserved under various Thai kings and underwent several restorations following incidents like lightning strikes and fire damage.
- Wat Mahathat - Wat Phra Mahathat is one of the oldest and most important temples in Ayutthaya, once home to the Buddha’s sacred relic. It suffered significant damage in 1767. Highlights include ancient structures, murals, and a famous Buddha’s head entwined in tree roots.
