Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - To accommodate victims of significant purges under the Khmer Rouge, a new detention center was established in the building formerly known as Tuol Svay Prey High School,[5][6] named after a royal ancestor of King Norodom Sihanouk. In March or April 1976, the five buildings of the complex were transformed into a prison and interrogation center. Other buildings in the town had already been used as prison S-21. The Khmer Rouge renamed the complex “Security Prison 21” (S-21) and began construction to modify the prison for inmates: the buildings were surrounded by electrified barbed wire, classrooms were converted into small prison and torture chambers, and all windows were covered with iron bars and barbed wire to prevent escapes and suicides.

Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Mass graves containing 8,895 bodies were discovered at Choeung Ek following the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. Many of the deceased were former political prisoners held by the Khmer Rouge in their Tuol Sleng detention center and other Cambodian detention centers.
Today, Choeung Ek serves as a memorial, marked by a Buddhist stupa. The stupa features acrylic glass sides and is filled with over 5,000 human skulls. Some lower levels are open during the day for direct viewing of the skulls, many of which are shattered or smashed.
Tourists are encouraged by the Cambodian government to visit Choeung Ek. In addition to the stupa, there are pits from which bodies were exhumed. Human bones still remain scattered across the site.

Wat Phnom Daun Penh - According to legend, in 1372, a wealthy old lady named “Penh” lived on a small hill near the confluence of four rivers. One day, during a rainstorm, Penh went to the port to bathe and saw a floating Koki tree in the river. She called the villagers to retrieve it from the water. Upon scraping off the mud, they discovered four Buddha statues made of bronze, brass, and one of marble, along with a statue of Vishnu holding a staff, chain, snail, and lotus flower. Penh asked the villagers to help retrieve the Koki tree and the four treasures. Later, she instructed the villagers to build an artificial hill and a small wooden temple on top to house the statues. She invited monks to bless the statues, and the monks named the hermitage “Wat Phnom,” as it is known today.
