Rainy Day Delights: A Riverside Thai Cooking Experience in Phang-nga
Caught in the rainy season in Phang-nga, I found solace in a delightful Thai cooking class. Join me as I recount the flavors and friendships discovered in this culinary adventure.
A Rainy Day Adventure in Phang-nga
As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips and a love for culinary adventures, I found myself in the picturesque region of Phang-nga, Thailand. My husband and I had parked our RV near the serene riverside, hoping to explore the local culture and cuisine. The rainy season had set in, and the weather was less than ideal for outdoor excursions. However, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it led us to a delightful experience at the Riverside Thai Cooking Class.
Our host, Apple, picked us up from our hotel and drove us to her charming home, which doubles as a cooking school. The drive itself was a nostalgic reminder of the countless road trips I took across America, where every journey was an opportunity to discover something new. As we arrived, the warm and welcoming atmosphere of Apple’s home instantly made us feel at ease. We were joined by a friendly lady from Germany, and together, we embarked on a culinary journey that promised to be both educational and entertaining.
Discovering the Flavors of Thailand
The class began with a tour of the local market, where Apple introduced us to the vibrant array of Thai herbs, spices, and fresh produce. It was reminiscent of the small-town farmers’ markets back home, where the air is filled with the scent of fresh produce and the chatter of locals. The market was a sensory delight, and I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the roadside stands I often visited during my travels across the Midwest.
Back at the cooking school, we were presented with a menu of around 40 different recipes to choose from. My husband and I, along with our new German friend, decided on a selection that included spicy glass noodles salad, crispy deep-fried belly pork, fried shrimp in curry powder sauce, and the classic pad Thai. Under Apple’s expert guidance, we shared the preparation and cooking of these dishes, each step a dance of flavors and aromas.
A Taste of Home Away from Home
As we sat down to enjoy the fruits of our labor, I was reminded of the communal meals shared with family and friends during our road trips. The dishes were served with a side of rice and a choice of soft drinks, and the flavors were nothing short of extraordinary. My husband and I exchanged knowing glances, both of us appreciating the authenticity and depth of the Thai cuisine we had just created.
Apple’s teaching style was patient and encouraging, making even our shy twelve-year-old granddaughter feel at home. It was a heartwarming experience to see her engage with the cooking process, her confidence growing with each dish. As the class came to an end, we were promised detailed recipes via email, allowing us to recreate these delightful dishes back home.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that this cooking class was more than just a culinary lesson; it was a reminder of the joy of discovery and the connections we make along the way. Whether on the open road or in a cozy kitchen in Phang-nga, the spirit of adventure and the warmth of shared experiences continue to inspire my travels.
