Kathmandu (1,300m/4,265ft) to Lukla (2,845m/9,333ft) to Phakding (2,610m/8,562ft)
Phakding - After enjoying breakfast, transfer to the Domestic Airport for a Trans Himalayan flight, landing dramatically on the hillside at Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu/Everest region. Meet the local porters and walk downhill to the Sherpa settlement of Cheplung. The trail then follows the side of the Dudh Koshi Valley before ascending to Ghat (2,530m/8,350ft). Another gentle hour leads up to Phakding.
Phakding (2,610m/8,562ft) - Namche (3440 m/11,285ft)
Namche Bazaar - The trail meanders through pine forests along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing numerous suspension bridges via the Sherpa villages of Benkar, Chumoa, Monjo, and Jorsale: the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park and permit checkpoint, offering tranquil views of the glistening Thamserku (6,618m/21,714ft). The trail continues along the riverbed to the confluence of the Bhote and Dudh Koshi Rivers. It then climbs steadily, crossing the high Tenzing-Hilary suspension bridge with inspiring glimpses of Everest and the Nuptse-Lhotse ridge. A final three-hour ascent through pine forests leads to the prosperous trading and administrative town of Namche Bazaar.
Acclimatization and Exploration day
Namche Bazaar - This is a scheduled acclimatization day on the trek. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and health experts recommend stopping for at least one extra night. Stay active and explore rather than rest: climb high and sleep low is the acclimatization advice. Namche Bazaar offers ATMs, cyber cafés, delicious restaurant food, and bakeries, plus a colorful market each Friday evening and Saturday morning. Visit the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park Visitor’s Centre on the hillock, which has informative displays on Sherpa culture, local flora, and fauna. Take an entertaining side trip to the large traditional Sherpa village of Khumjung (3,780m/12,402ft), with fine views of Thamserku, Kangtega, Ama Dablam, and Everest amidst a sea of lesser peaks.
Namche (3,440m/11,285ft) to Phortse (3,810m/11,285ft)
Phortse(3,810m/12,500ft) – Dingboche (4,410m/14,467ft): 10km, 6-7 hrs.
Dingboche - Leaving Phortse, take the high trail, considered one of the most beautiful trails with outstanding views of enormous mountains and deep valleys. The trail above the glacial river and grazing musk deer merges with the Everest Highway route right on the bridge and continues to Pangboche with closer views of the towering Ama Dablam (6,856m/22,495ft). The trail then follows the river as it rises to its confluence with the Lobuche Khola and continues up to Dingboche: the last year-round Sherpa settlement. Different views of Ama Dablam rise above terraced fields of barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. The fields are walled to protect crops from icy winds and animals during the short growing season.
Acclimatization and Exploration day at Dingboche
Dingboche - It’s another scheduled rest day of the trek. This increases fitness and oxygen levels in the thin air. A day hike returning 4/5 hours back to Dingboche village up to Nangkartshang Hill (5090m/16,700ft) is a perfect destination to acclimatize. The trail leads with breathtaking landscapes and marvelous views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Imjatse peak (Island peak), Makalu, and a tremendous view of the valley. Although the trek is a steep ascent, it is worth the hike for acclimatization and scenery. The thin air as the altitude gains slowly towards Chhukung.
Dingboche (4,410m/14,467ft) to Lobuche (4,940m/16,206ft)
Lobuche - After breakfast, the trail climbs to a ridge with a towering view of Tawache peak & Cholatse. The trail continues through the Yak grazing pasture to Dhukla (4620 /15158ft) crossing a wooden bridge over a roaring stream. The trail leads steeply up to the gravely terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier for about one hour, then bears left to the group of memorials to lost climbers and Sherpas, including Scott Fischer who died in the 1996 Everest disaster. This place offers an awesome view of Khumbutse (6623m), Lingtren (6697), Pumori (7145 m), and Mahalangur Himal. Everest is hidden behind the towering wall of Nuptse and Lhotse. Follow the valley upstream for about an hour to Lobuche.
Lobuche(4,910m/16,108ft) - Gorak Shep (5,160m/16,928ft) - Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,597ft): Gorak Shep: 14km, 8-9 hrs
Gorak Shep(5,160m/16,928) - Kala Patthar (5,550m/18,207ft) - Pheriche (4,230m/13,877ft): 15km, 7-8 hrs.
Pheriche - Dughlha Road - Early morning, climb 2-3 hrs. up to Kala Patthar (5545 m/18192 ft) to witness the first daylight from the top of the world (Mt. Everest). This is a milestone of the trek to inspect a panoramic view with the fantastic sunrise over Mt. Everest, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nupte, Mt. Ama Dablam, and many more. After accomplishing Kala Patthar, trek down to Gorakshep and retrace down to Pheriche for a warmer and better night’s sleep.
Pheriche(4,230m/13,877ft) – Tengboche (3,870m/12,696ft): 8km, 4-5 hrs.
Tengboche - Today, the trail returns to the tree line area and re-steps to Pangboche. The famous Tengboche monastery still has much to see and makes sense to halt for a night, which provides a break and relief to EBC sore legs. Being a pious Buddhist settlement, the wildlife is unharmed, so there is a possibility of encountering some wild animals such as musk deer, mountain goats, pheasants, etc.
Namche Bazaar(3,440 m/11,285ft): 9km, 5-6 hrs.
Namche Bazaar - After breakfast, the trail drops down to the Dudh Kosi river to Phunki Tenga and rises up to Kyanjuma where the EBC trail was skipped. About 3 more hours of considerably easy walking bring you to the Mountain Hub Namche Bazaar, where you can take a break with drinks and some celebration to feel the vacation.
Namche Bazaar(3,440m/11,285ft) – Lukla (2,845/9,333ft): 19km, 8-9 hrs.
Lukla - From Namche, descend to more comfortable altitudes and the friendly farming villages from Jorsale through to Cheplung. Round off the adventure with the final 700m, 35min ascent to Lukla, and bid farewell to the porters.
Lukla(2,845m/9,333ft) – Kathmandu (1,300m/4,265ft), 35 min flight
Thamel - After an early breakfast, take the return flight to Kathmandu. Transfer to the hotel, marking the end of the trip.
