Uros Floating Islands - The Uros consist of 100 man-made islands crafted entirely from totora reeds, a plant found in the shallow parts of the lake. Walking on these islands feels like stepping onto a large floating straw mat.
During the visit, the Uros warmly invite visitors onto their islands and into their modest homes to share their lifestyle. Visitors will learn about the construction of the islands, their homes, and even their boats.
The Uros often demonstrate how fresh reeds are regularly added (every few weeks) to sustain the islands. Travelers can engage with the locals and explore handicrafts. A popular activity is an optional ride on a traditional reed boat, often shaped like a puma (for an additional 20 soles per person). The Uros boatmen offer a short cruise on these handmade reed vessels, providing a fantastic photo opportunity and a chance to imagine the ancient use of reed boats. Visiting the Uros Floating Islands offers a captivating insight into a unique culture that has adapted to Lake Titicaca.
Centro Ceremonial Pachatata - Amantani’s main attractions are its two mountain peaks, each crowned with ancient ruins. Pachamama (Mother Earth) and Pachatata (Father Earth) are pre-Inca temple sites still used by locals for annual ceremonies. Hiking to one of these peaks (approximately 4,130 meters elevation) is a tour highlight: at the summit, visitors will find the stone remnants of the temple and enjoy 360° panoramic views of Lake Titicaca, which are truly breathtaking at sunset.
Amantani Island - During the stay, guests are hosted by a local family in their home, offering a special experience. The family prepares meals using local ingredients (such as quinoa soup, potatoes, and possibly fried cheese or eggs) and ensures guests feel at home. In the evening, the community often invites visitors to a traditional dance party. Guests can dress in typical attire—men in ponchos and woolen caps, women in embroidered blouses and layered skirts with colorful belts—and dance to live Andean music with their hosts.
This joyful, family-friendly celebration highlights the music and happiness of Amantani’s people. Amantani Island is often regarded as the favorite part of the tour by travelers due to this warm cultural immersion. The opportunity to live like a local for a day—eating in their kitchen, sleeping in their home, and sharing stories despite language barriers—makes Amantani a truly enriching destination.
Amantani - Taquile - Puno
Amantani Island - Enjoy a delightful breakfast with local families on the charming Amantani Island. Relish traditional delicacies and savor the authentic flavors of this vibrant community while learning about their unique customs and way of life. After breakfast, take a leisurely walk downhill to the main dock, where the journey continues to the captivating Taquile Island.
Taquile Island - During the visit, guests will walk to the main village at the island’s crest (~3,950 meters above sea level). In the Plaza de Armas, there is often a cooperative store where Taquileños sell their handmade hats, scarves, and textiles. The guide will highlight the distinctive dress of the locals: for instance, Taquile men wear different colored hats to indicate their marital status (red & white for single, solid red for married), and important community leaders wear special woven belts.
Visitors will likely witness a demonstration of weaving techniques or the use of natural dyes from plants and minerals. Then, enjoy a lunch on Taquile.
Before departing, guests can explore independently: climbing to a viewpoint, taking photos of the brilliant blue lake contrasting with the island’s red soil and green terraces. Taquile Island offers a glimpse into an Andean community that has fiercely preserved its identity.
