Exploring Punakha & Wangdue (78km/ 2.5hr)
Dochula Pass - Stop at Dochula Pass (3150m) to enjoy stunning views of the eastern Himalayan mountain range.
Druk Wangyel Monastery - Visit Drukwangyel (Royal Temple) at Dochula, known for the Druk Wangyel festival performed by the Royal Bhutan Army.
Chimi Lhakhang Temple - Upon reaching Wangdue, hike through Metshina village to Chimi Lhakhang, a unique “fertility temple” where childless couples often receive blessings for a child.
Punakha Dzong - Explore the Punakha Dzong, “Palace of the Great Happiness.” This magnificent fortress is situated between two rivers, the Pochu and Mochu, representing male and female rivers.
Punakha Suspension Bridge - Walk across the 200m suspension bridge over the Phochu river to Gidagom village.
Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten - Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a breathtaking Buddhist temple in the Punakha Valley of Bhutan. It is renowned for its intricate architecture, stunning views, and serene atmosphere.
History of Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten: Built in 1993 by the Queen Mother of Bhutan, Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, the temple was constructed to bring peace and prosperity to Bhutan and shield the country from negative energies. It took four years to complete, with a dedicated team of 100 Bhutanese artisans.
Paro Sightseeing & Detour (135km/ 3-4hr)
Paro - Ta Dzong is a historic watchtower in Paro, Bhutan. It is one of the region’s most iconic landmarks and a popular tourist attraction. Built in the 17th century to protect Paro Rinpung Dzong, the nearby fortress and monastery.
In the 1960s, the watchtower was transformed into the National Museum of Bhutan, featuring a collection of artifacts and exhibits that highlight the country’s cultural and historical heritage. The museum’s displays include traditional Bhutanese art, textiles, weapons, and household items, as well as exhibits on the country’s flora and fauna.
Rinpung Dzong - Paro Rinpung Dzong is a historic fortress and Buddhist monastery in the Paro Valley of Bhutan. It is a popular tourist destination and is considered one of the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture.
Built in the 17th century to defend the Paro Valley against Tibetan invaders, it has served as the administrative and religious center of the Paro district. The dzong’s name means “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels” and it is renowned for its stunning paintings, intricate woodwork, and traditional Bhutanese architecture.
Visitors can explore the dzong’s courtyards, temples, and administrative offices, gaining insight into Bhutanese history and culture. The dzong also hosts the famous Paro Tsechu festival, a vibrant annual event celebrating Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage.
Kyichu Lhakhang - Kyichu Lhakhang is an ancient Buddhist temple in the Paro Valley of Bhutan. It is one of the oldest and most sacred temples in the country, serving as an important site for pilgrimage and religious practice.
Built in the 7th century by Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo, who is believed to have constructed 108 temples throughout the region to subdue a giant demoness obstructing the spread of Buddhism. Kyichu Lhakhang is one of the two temples he built in Bhutan, the other being Jambay Lhakhang in Bumthang.
Kyichu Lhakhang has undergone several renovations and expansions over the centuries, with the most recent in the 1970s by the third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The temple houses many sacred relics and artifacts, including an image of Jowo Sakyamuni, the Buddha, and a statue of Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
Excursion to the Mystical Tiger’s Nest (60km/ 1hr)
Paro Taktsang - After a delightful breakfast, spend the day hiking up the forested path to Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan’s most renowned and scenic icon. Tiger’s Nest clings to sheer cliffs 900m above Paro Valley. The climb is steep and takes about 4-5 hours round trip. (Ponies & horses optional)
• Enjoy lunch at the hillside cafe with a close view of Tiger’s Nest.
• In the evening, savor an authentic Bhutanese farewell dinner at a typical village home with local liquor called “Ara.”
• Optional hot stone bath: River rocks are heated and placed in a large wooden tub with herbs. This type of bath is believed to have healing medicinal properties.
