• Mausoleum of Mukhammad Bashoro - Located east of Panjakent, off the main highway, lies the Mausoleum of Mukhammad Bashoro in the small village of Mazari Sharif. This mausoleum, built around the 11th or 12th centuries, honors the Islamic scholar Mukhammad Bashoro, an expert in ‘khadises’.
• Ancient Town of Panjakent - The ancient town of Panjakent was established as early as the 5th century BC as part of the Sogdian civilization. It began to thrive in the 5th century AD, expanding significantly to cover much of the elevated area. The city featured temples, fortresses, and large mansions for its wealthiest inhabitants.
• Panjakent Bazaar - The Panjakent market is lively, with a rush of floral-clad women in headscarves moving through the ornate gate. The morning hustle is evident as plastic bags are filled with fruits, vegetables, nuts, and sweets.
• Republican Museum of History and Local Lore of Rudaki - This elegant single-storey museum, adorned with white Doric columns and a fine floral display, dedicates a room to Abu Abdullah Rudaki (858–941), the ‘father of Persian poetry’. The museum is particularly notable for its collection of textiles and costumes, frescoes from Ancient Penjikent, and Neolithic tools from nearby Sarazm.
• Proto-urban site of Sarazm - The most significant site near Panjakent is Sarazm, the remains of a city older than the one founded by the Sogdians. Established around 3500 BC, Sarazm is likely the oldest city in Central Asia. Its inhabitants excelled in agriculture and trade, making it a wealthy and important center in the region.
