Casco Viejo - Casco Viejo is truly stunning – strolling along those cobblestone streets is like traveling back in time! The vibrant old buildings with their elegant balconies are incredibly charming, and each plaza has its own unique atmosphere. A stop at a quaint cafe for coffee offers a perfect opportunity to observe the relaxed pace of life, which is a refreshing contrast to the rest of the city.
Exploring the area reveals historic churches and beautifully restored mansions, allowing visitors to feel the rich history, from the days of pirates to when this was the city’s heart. Hidden in narrow alleys are delightful art galleries and shops, and the street art adorning some walls is simply remarkable. The seafood at the cozy waterfront eateries is absolutely delicious!
The most enjoyable aspect is getting pleasantly lost, with every turn revealing something new, like a hidden courtyard filled with vibrant flowers or musicians performing on a street corner. Despite the presence of tourists, the authentic local vibe remains, especially as the sunset casts a warm glow on the ancient stone buildings. -
Panama Canal - The Panama Canal “Miraflores Visitors Center” is definitely worth a visit! Upon entering, the excitement is immediate – large windows provide a direct view of the locks, where massive ships are lifted and lowered amidst the rushing water. The precision involved, even for these enormous vessels, is truly astonishing!
The 45-minute film shown there is fascinating, detailing the canal’s construction, the workers who made it possible, and the incredible engineering challenges they overcame. A small museum displays historical photos and artifacts, and the rooftop deck offers the best vantage point to observe the activity below. Enjoying a meal at the cafe while watching ships navigate through is an unbeatable experience!
Standing there, taking it all in, allows one to see the water levels change and the enormous gates open and close. It’s amazing! -
Amador Causeway (Calzada de Amador) - The Amador Causeway is a fantastic destination! As the journey begins, the ocean breeze is invigorating after time spent in the city.
Driving along the strip that connects three small islands offers breathtaking views! On one side, ships approach the Panama Canal, while on the other, the vast Pacific Ocean stretches out. The colorful Biomuseo building is a striking contrast against the water.
Along the way, food stalls and cafes provide a laid-back atmosphere compared to downtown. Families ride bikes, people capture photos, and upon reaching Flamenco Island, there’s a perfect view of the entire city skyline.
The relaxed vibe compared to the city center is the best part. Families biking, couples taking photos, and locals enjoying the breeze create a serene environment. By the time Flamenco Island is reached, the city is beautifully spread out behind, offering a perfect perspective of how Panama City is nestled between land and sea. -
Bridge of the Americas - Crossing the Bridge of the Americas is an incredible experience, highlighting the transition from one continent to another! As the journey onto the bridge begins, its impressive structure with a large arch soaring over the Pacific Ocean is immediately apparent.
Looking out, there’s a stunning view of ships lined up to enter the Panama Canal, sparking curiosity about how they navigate the locks. On one side, Panama City’s bustling skyline is visible, while on the other, lush green hills and tropical coastline extend into the distance.
The gentle movement of the bridge under the car is a subtle reminder of its uniqueness, not frightening, but rather a testament to its significance. It remains a powerful symbol of Panama’s role in connecting the Americas. By the time the other side is reached, the canal, city, and ocean have all been seen from this remarkable vantage point.
