Hierapolis (“Holy City”) was an ancient Greco-Roman city in Phrygia, situated on hot springs in southwestern Anatolia. Its ruins lie next to modern-day Pamukkale.
Hierapolis is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hot springs have served as a spa since the 2nd century B.C.E., attracting visitors seeking relief from various ailments, with many choosing to retire or spend their final days here.
Some notable features include the extensive necropolis filled with sarcophagi, the main street with its gates and latrines, the cathedral, the theatre, and St. Philip’s tomb. The hot springs create cascades known as the Cotton Castle. Due to the distance, we must depart from Antalya early and return late, but the experience of this remarkable place makes it worthwhile. The walk from beginning to end, including a visit to the theatre, takes approximately 45 minutes.
