Mercato Ballaro - This vibrant market stretches from Piazza Casa Professa to the ramparts of Corso Tukory towards Porta Sant’Agata. Renowned for offering the freshest produce from the Palermo countryside, Ballarò is the city’s oldest market, bustling daily with hundreds of visitors. The lively atmosphere is enhanced by the sellers’ enthusiastic calls, known as abbanniate, delivered in a distinctive and colorful local accent to draw the attention of passersby. The market is a lively scene of crowded stalls and streets filled with wooden boxes showcasing goods, constantly promoted for their excellent quality and competitive prices. Primarily a food market, Ballarò specializes in fruits, vegetables, spices, meat, and fish, but also offers household items for cooking and cleaning, similar to the markets of Capo and Vucciria.

Norman Palace - The Palazzo dei Normanni, also referred to as the Royal Palace, is situated in Palermo and currently serves as the seat of the Sicilian regional assembly. As the oldest royal residence in Europe, it was home to the sovereigns of the Kingdom of Sicily, the imperial seat with Frederick II and Conrad IV, and the historic Sicilian Parliament. The Palatine Chapel is located on the first floor of the building, while the west wing is designated for the Italian Army. It is one of the island’s most visited monuments. The Federico II Foundation manages additional tourist services; the main entrances (parliamentary and tourist) are on Piazza del Parlamento, with the driveway entrance on the side of Piazza Indipendenza. Since July 3, 2015, it has been part of the World Heritage Site (UNESCO) as part of the serial site “Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale.”
-
Duomo di Monreale - The Cathedral of Monreale, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Nuova, is the primary Catholic place of worship in Monreale, within the metropolitan city of Palermo, and serves as the archbishop’s seat of the namesake archdiocese. Constructed beginning in 1172 at the behest of William II of Altavilla, King of Sicily from 1166 to 1189, it is celebrated for its opulent Byzantine mosaics adorning the interior. In August 1926, Pope Pius XI elevated it to the status of a minor basilica. Since July 3, 2015, it has been included in the World Heritage Site (UNESCO) as part of the Arab-Norman itinerary of Palermo and the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale.

Monte Pellegrino - Mount Pellegrino is a prominent mountain located in Palermo, the capital of Sicily. It reaches a maximum height of 606 meters above sea level and is a limestone promontory extending into the Tyrrhenian Sea, marking the northern end of the Gulf of Palermo. The north-western slope defines the south-eastern border of Mondello Bay, while the Montepellegrino district lies at its base. In the 18th century, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe described it as “the most beautiful promontory in the world” in his essay Journey to Italy.
-
Spiaggia di Mondello - This beach is nestled around a large bay, bordered by Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, and is separated from the urban center by the Parco della Favorita. It is considered the most famous beach in the capital and is one of the most popular Sicilian coasts for both national and international tourism.
-
Quattro Canti - The official name of the square is Piazza Villena, in honor of the Viceroy whose full name was Marquis Don Juan Fernandez Pacheco de Villena y Ascalon. However, ancient sources refer to it as Ottangolo or Teatro del Sole, as at least one of the architectural backdrops is illuminated by the sun during the day. The Quattro Canti are the four decorative structures that define the space of the crossing. Created between 1609 and 1620, and topped with royal, senatorial, and viceroyal coats of arms in white marble, the four elevations are arranged on multiple levels, featuring a decoration that ascends from the natural world to the heavens. The four floors of the facade are adorned as follows: on the lower floor, fountains represent the rivers of the ancient city (Oreto, Kemonia, Pannaria, Papireto).
-
Fontana della Vergogna (Fontana Pretoria) - In 1573, the Palermitan senate purchased the fountain with the intention of placing it in the center of the square, leading to the demolition of several houses to accommodate the monumental structure designed for an open space. By 1581, the fountain’s installation in the square was completed under the direction of Camillo Camilliani, with assistance from Michelangelo Naccherino. It is popularly known as the Fountain of Shame; the nickname arose from the presence of a cloistered monastery of the Dominican Order, whose nuns, disturbed by the abundance of exposed private parts on the statues, ordered acts of vandalism to deface them.
-
Santuario Santa Rosalia - The Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia is a religious site in Palermo, constructed around the seventeenth century on the foundations of earlier religious buildings in honor of the city’s new patron saint. Today, the sanctuary is a destination for religious and nature tourism in Palermo, as it is located near a viewpoint offering a unique panorama of the city. Inside the sanctuary, there is also a museum section, inaugurated in 2018 and called the treasure rooms, where historical, artistic, and religious objects are displayed. The sanctuary is situated at an altitude of 429 meters on Monte Pellegrino and is accessible via a long staircase.
-
Piazza Marina - Piazza Marina is a square in the historic center of Palermo, located in the Kalsa district or Tribunal district. At the center of the square is the Garibaldi Villa, designed by architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile in 1863. Inside the villa, there is a magnolioid ficus, planted in 1864, approximately 30 meters tall and with a diameter of about 20 meters, dominating the quadrant of Piazza Marina and facing the entrance of Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri.
