An exploration of Albanian culture and language in Sicily
In Palermo province, there are five towns of Albanian heritage and culture, hosting a significant community of over 50,000 individuals. The term ‘Arbëreshë’ refers to the Albanian ethno-linguistic minority that has historically resided in Southern and island regions of Italy. Originating from Albania, along with other numerous Albanian communities in Morea and Ciamuria, these groups established settlements in Italy between the 15th and 18th centuries, following the death of the national hero of Albania, Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg. Furthermore, the incremental take over of Albania and all Byzantine Empire territories by the Turkish-Ottomans propelled them to migrate. Their culture is defined by specific components, seen in language, religious traditions, customs, iconographic art, cuisine, and fiercely conserved due to their recognition of belonging to a distinct ethnic group.
