Guru Nanak, as a young man, was sent by his father Mehta Kalu, who hoped to instill a sense of business in his son, to buy goods to sell for a profit. However, on his way, Nanak encountered some hungry sadhus and decided to use the money his father had given him (Rs. 20) to provide a meal for them. Returning home without any purchases, Mehta Kalu was very annoyed. But Nanak explained that he had done a good deed by feeding the starving sadhus, gaining the best profit from the money. It is located about 91 km (57 mi) west of Lahore. Until 2005, it was part of the Sheikhupura District.
Originally, the locality was founded by a Hindu ruler named Raja Vairat and was named Raipur. It was destroyed during the Islamic invasions of the Indian subcontinent. A later township on the site was founded during the Delhi Sultanate rule by Rai Bhoi, a Rajput of Bhati stock whose Hindu ancestor had converted to Islam due to Sufism, and was known as Rai-Bhoi-Di-Talwandi. His great-grandson Rai Bular Bhatti renamed it ‘Nankana Sahib’ after the birth of Guru Nanak.
