Outstanding historical site - Book yourself a guided tour for this outstanding historical site. With your Maori guide learn about the beginnings of modern New Zealand and tour the historic buildings. The site also houses the largest dugout canoe in the world built for the Māori Kings – amazing. Well worth a visit.

Interesting insights into how NZ came to be - In Bay of Islands, we took the ship tender ashore and then it was a short walk to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. For international travellers entry is $70 NZD, so make sure you have enough funds or use your credit card. While we waited for our guided tour to start we visited the Museum of Waitangi giving information about how NZ came about. Then our guide took us round the main sites in the Treaty Grounds. The tour finished with a cultural performance. In total we were there for about 3 hours.

Living history experience - Visited Waitangi Treaty Grounds on one of our second day touring New Zealand. Our guide was a delightful fountain of knowledge. CC regaled us in an entertaining manner that allowed us to learn and absorb the entwining history of the cultures that make of the fabric of New Zealand. We learnt a great deal and enjoyed our visit tremendously. Thank you CC. The grounds and facilities are not only historically significant but very beautiful.

Educational and enjoyable visit to a beautiful and important place - Absolutely brilliant! An excellent site with several very good museums which gave the full picture of Māori history and the founding of NZ. We also enjoyed the cultural performances and tour . We went back for a second day as we enjoyed the experience so much and wanted to look at some exhibits again .

Well worth a taking a full day - We walked to the Treaty grounds from our motel in Paihia along a delightful walkway learning about coastal birds on our way. The entrance to the grounds us impressive with friendly staff to welcome you. Do take the option of a guided 1 hour tour. Our guide, Cece, was excellent - passionately knowledgeable with just the right amount of humour & bonhomie to balance out the amount of information she provided on this important period in Aotearoa's history. We didn't stay for the performance as wanted to spend more time taking in the information in the Treaty House (Busby's house) and the two museums. Te Rau Aroha - museum of the price of citizenship had me in tears. A beautiful immersive experience that, as the fliers state, 'bear witness to Article 3 of the Treaty of Waitangi's real world impact....'. Te Kōngahu Museum takes you deeply into pre-treaty contact time and the political-economic environment that lead to it's writing. The personalities involved shine through......history is brought alive through the exhibition. A must for any NZer wishing to truly understand our nation's foundations, and for overseas tourist wished to gain some historical insights. And, to take a break between museums - visit Whare Waka Cafe - a lovely spot with good food and drinks. Highly recommended. Tickets last for two days.

Waitangi Treaty Grounds well worth it - Wow! Loved my time at the Waitangi Treaty grounds. It has improved so much since my last visit over 10 years ago. Exhibitions, videos, storytelling, gardens, historic buildings, native bush are great. Best of all was CC the tour guide. She is the best tour guide I have ever seen… and I’m a teacher / tour guide myself. I highly recommend visiting this national treasure. Go on both days of the 2 day pass.

Less than Enthralling - We visited this museum based on the reviews and how some NZDers mentioned it’s a ‘must-see’ for anyone interested in the history of NZD. We did the one hour walking tour and then the Māori show (30-40 minutes). The museum was average at best and failed to explain a lot of basic things (such as - when did NZD actually gain independence from being a colony? Was it a protectorate at any stage? Etc…). Had we had the choice again we would’ve skipped it entirely - or, at a minimum, skip the walking tour and do it on your own pace. This says a lot as we would classify ourselves as museum fanatics who can spend an entire day in a museum when we like it - to read every last bit available. They have a lovely green lawn area where one can sit/relax and take in the beautiful view of the bay.
