A sobering and insightful visit to the Nazi torture and murder camps. - This was my first time visiting Poland. When I began researching activities for my 5-day trip, the ones that kept coming up were Auschwitz and Birkenau. From the outset, my day was a fantastic experience. I stayed at the Red Radisson in Kraków and there was a shuttle bus that lifted me and others to Auschwitz. Robert, our driver was a great guy. He was helpful, friendly and very witty. Robert explained our agenda for the day and he made sure that everyone felt at ease and relaxed. Upon entering Auschwitz, there was a sense of sadness and foreboding. Our tour guide was brilliant and she explained everything perfectly. I cannot remember her name but she was so professional and superb. Seeing the actual areas where such atrocities took place made me aware of the brutality and ruthlessness that happened. The whole complex is a necessity to show the world what happened to so many men, women and children. It was overwhelming at times to witness places of extreme brutality. A short time later we were driven to Birkenau. This was a much larger complex and it was built in a much more remote area. Here I saw evidence of the ruins of gas chambers and incinerators. There are high barbed wire fences as far as the eye can see and several gates with look-out posts. It is hard to comprehend how such horrors were imposed on huge numbers of people. The dedication and skill of the people who have kept Auschwitz and Birkenau death camps fit for public tours is a testament to them. I highly recommend visiting these places. It is such a worthwhile visit. Thank you to Robert, our great driver, to our wonderful tour guide and to all those who keep Auschwitz and Birkenau in the public eye. Most importantly, may we remember the innocent souls who perished here during the Nazi reign of terror. Robin.

In silence - Unfortunately no visit in French in our niches. Otherwise complete visit under the sun. We expected more "alive" with more pictures, more reconstructions but it's catching. Birkenau, impressive because it is such a huge surface of cruelty.
