In the afternoon, we explore Oudong, the royal capital from 1618 to 1866 before the shift to Phnom Penh. There are several temples and stupas spread across three hills here. These magnificent stupas which can be seen from afar are the resting places for numerous Khmer kings including King Monivong (1927-1941) and King Ang Duong (1845-1859). A trek up the hill consisting of 500 steps provides not only a good workout but also a picturesque countryside view. This place was also witnessed some of Khmer Rouge’s longest stand against the Vietnamese army in 1979. A memorial is also constructed here in honor of those who fell victim to the Khmer Rouge.
