- Akerselva River - Following a brief introduction and overview from the tour guide, participants will board one of the city’s commuter trains heading towards Maridalen Lake. This lake serves as one of Oslo’s primary drinking water sources and is the origin of the Akerselva River. The walk commences just below the lake, adjacent to the Technical Museum at Kjelsås, meandering through wooded areas and vibrant wooden houses.
As the journey progresses, the landscape around the river will transform as the tour moves into the city’s more industrial core. Here, historical factories utilized the Akerselva’s power, and dams were constructed, creating stunning waterfalls to admire. The guide will share insights into this rich history and its effects on the river itself.
If time permits, a detour will be taken to the beautifully preserved wooden houses of Telthusbakken and Damstredet, known as Oslo’s “most Instagrammed” streets!
- Mathallen Oslo - The tour concludes in the lively Vulkan district, home to the beloved Mathallen food hall. Here, the guide will lead participants inside the food hall and introduce them to a food vendor called Helt Vilt (Translation: Totally Wild) for an optional delightful food tasting. Rest assured, the guide will offer their top recommendations on what to sample from the extensive selection of local Norwegian cuisine!
Before parting ways, a public transport ticket will be provided, along with an explanation of the easiest route back to the city center. Alternatively, participants are encouraged to spend additional time in this delightful part of the city, perhaps exploring the trendy Grunnerløkka neighborhood or continuing along the Akerselva footpath all the way to where it flows into the fjord.
This tour is a favorite and one of the best ways to enjoy a few hours in the city while still feeling connected to nature!
