Horrible driver, great sites - This review is about the driver provided not the sites. The purpose of this booking was to get an older American travelling couple from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer with stops along the way in Osian to see the ancient temples and in Khichan to see the demoiselle cranes. The driver provided drove us from Udaipur to Jodphur three days earlier and so had dropped us at our hotel in Jodphur and knew where to find us. In both places, the night before pickup, the driver was provided a dropped pin on a Google map and a confirmation of the agreed pick up time. Both in Udaipur and Jodphur the driver was late picking us up, costing us 30 minutes on our day of activities each time, vacation time I would have preferred to use doing coffee or sleeping rather than standing on the curb waiting. In Udaipur I walked 10 minutes to his parked car and had him drive back to the pick up point with the other passenger and luggage. Picking up on time and driving safely are the two basic requirements of this job. Here are the other points I found lacking in this driver service: 1. Traveling in 90F heat on trip between Udaipur and Jodhpur, driver did not use the a/c during the 5.5+ hours of driving time and so we were exhausted on arrival. He did use the a/c on the Jodhpur to Jaisalmer journey. 2. Driver accepted and spent much time on video calls while driving. 3. Driver called an English speaker and had me talk to that person who instructed us to “be quick” at Osian. Interesting given he cost us 30 minutes in the late pickup. 4. As we approached Khichan, driver asked at least 4 other motorists etc how to get there. Driver had GPS on his phone. 5. Driver stopped for gas shortly before Khichan and filled the tank with us sitting in the car and the engine running. This made me very uncomfortable as it is a known safety/explosion hazard. 6. We spent 90 minutes at Osian and 20 minutes at Khichan. This entire journey from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer requires 5.5 hours of driving. After those two hours of stops, when the driver had no responsibilities, we headed directly to our destination, Jaisalmer. An hour before destination, driver stopped because “he was hungry”. We were not consulted as to if we wanted to stop or where. We stayed in the car, interested in getting to Jaisalmer quickly. Driver spent 50 minutes in the restaurant while we sat in car in 90+ heat. This time he did turn the car off and took the keys. This clocks in at 80 minutes of our time wasted by the driver and a lack of sensitivity to passenger comfort. We very much enjoyed the sites along the way. This driver succeeded in delivering us to our two destinations but is a very poor example of someone interested in their work. We have had other excellent drivers with Viator. This driver is not one of them. The WhatsApp name associated with the person who drove us is Himanshu Tak and his number ended in 341.
