Additional Information

The Shinsekai district is unique — there is nothing really like it anywhere else in Japan. The neighborhood dates back to the early 1900s and grew in popularity through the post-war “Showa” era until the 1960s. An exploration in this colorful neighborhood really is very “Local-Osaka.” It’s always so much fun, at any time of day!

Incredible Time Experience Local Cuisine - Had the most incredible time on a retro food tour of Osaka with Akiko! Not only did we have some incredible bites, like okonomiyaki, udon and kushikatsu, we were able to experience local games and shops (we loved the demonstration at Tower Knives so much, we went back the following day to purchase a set)! Akiko was really informative and really showed us a part of Osaka that we would've otherwise missed. Eternally grateful for such a fun experience!

Fun and delicious - We had a great time with our guide Kentaro in Osaka. We booked this tour after our good experience with the company in Kyoto and were not disappointed. Our guide met us below the Tsutenkaku tower, around the Takoyaki stand below the tower where we had our first snack. We were the only ones on the tour, so it was a very private tour. Ken took care to explain the history of the food we were eating and we learned a lot from his experience in Japan and Osaka. Especially in the last stop, a seafood restaurant, Ken ensured we tried a few dishes we would not have tried ourselves. We were positively surprised with his choices. We also enjoyed playing in the shooting stand and the pinball-like game with glass balls. We even won a few sweets. Having the tour with such an experienced guide was a great way to know the Osaka culture and try out new foods.

Highly recommended! - Thanks, Akiko, for a great experience! We had the opportunity to get to know a piece of authentic Japan. Akiko explained the historical background of the New World neighborhood and introduced us to the world of Osaka delicacies. Despite great crowds, she always knew where to take us for the next treats. An all-round successful evening!

Fun chat and food - Ike was lovely with an interesting story to tell and clear enthusiasm for life. So gentle too. He had Jahmelah helping, who was a livewire American who has lived in Japan for several years. A good combo. Food was great as was the retro pachinko. We wandered around under the old Osaka tower and even had a knife demo by a English/NZ ex-pat of many years, Daniel, at Tower Knives. Also recommended. Our guides were with us well over the 3 hours as we chatted away. Good food and great insight into Japanese life!

One of the highlights of our Osaka trip - A fantastic insight into this lesser known area of Osaka. This tour was booked by our tour company as part of our package. Probably wouldn't have thought to choose this. Bit so glad we did. Russ was an excellent host who loves this part of the city for good reason. Perfect mix of information, insight, fun activities and, above all else, great food. And don't forget to ask him about his band, The Stingrays!

One night in Osaka - We had Micky as our guide. Her English was excellent (she'd worked overseas and had spent 5 years in Ireland). There was clearly a planned itinerary for our evening with Micky, but because of our travel arrangements, we had eaten a late lunch and were not that hungry. So, on the hop, she had to come up with another plan for us. We wandered round the area by the Tower, went to a very old bakery and tasted their bell-shaped biscuits - yum. We also went into one of the amusement arcades and played pinball (great fun) and eventually ended up at a place having Ramen for supper. Very tasty too! Because we changed the plan, I'm not sure what the Retro part of the evening should have been but the area we explored with Micky was very vibrant. Micky was very friendly and very knowledgable. We enjoyed our time with her. We did think later that we it would also have been good to have had a tour of the area surrounding our hotel, as there appeared to be loads going on and plenty of options for food. We were only passing through Osaka and only stayed one night so a closer option to our hotel would have worked for us too.
