Fantastic workshop with plenty of extra help! - Jo was a fantastic teacher and went above and beyond teaching us about the process and how to do it ourselves. He had plenty of examples to view and was incredibly helpful giving us local recommendations. I would recommend this class to anyone looking for a creative experience.

Memorable Experience - The workshop was an educational and enjoyable experience. It was also efficiently run. While we were waiting on paint to dry, Jo gave us a history of kintsugi art and described its different elements. The matcha tea and lesson in how to make it was value- added as well. We enjoyed getting to purchase kintsugi art from an actual kintsugi artist.

Our Kintsugi workshop with Jo at Zenkei - Our Kintsugi workshop with Jo at Zenkei was an unforgettable highlight of our trip to Osaka and Japan. Set in a charming art studio over 120 years old, the experience felt like stepping into a piece of Japanese culture and history. Jo, a master artisan and awesome instructor, shared his extensive knowledge and passion for kintsugi, explaining the history, materials, and techniques used in this beautiful art form. His excellent English and engaging personality made the session even more enjoyable. The hands-on aspect was fantastic, allowing us to choose an antique piece to repair and adorn with 24k gold under Jo's expert guidance. This course is great for beginners as Jo’s instruction makes the process work for everyone. After the kintsugi session, we were treated to matcha tea where Jo taught us the proper way to prepare it. We also had the chance to explore the historic studio and admire Jo's own kintsugi pieces which were on display and for sale. We purchased two items to bring back as an additional memory and to support Jo. As a traditional kintsugi project takes weeks to complete, it’s not possible to complete all the steps, although a practical taste for the earlier steps is included, it’s the later and more exciting step of applying the gold that you focus on, followed by an education slide show of the history and full process. Make sure you do the course early in your trip as the materials you use take time to cure, so you can't bring your piece home with you the same day. We did this on our 2nd last day in Osaka, so Jo shipped our two dishes five days later and we picked them up at our final hotel in Tokyo. The dishes were well packed and we had no issues. Some people have even had their dishes shipped to their home addresses. This workshop is a perfect way to spend an afternoon and connect with the local art and culture of Japan. Highly recommend!

Amazing and thoughtful Kintsugi Course! - Such a great course!! Jo was a fantastic sensei and I learned so much about the art of Kintsugi. Even though you only complete the last part of the process (red lacquer and gold powder), the way Jo walks you through every other step that happens in the weeks-long process makes you feel like you were still a part of it all. Make sure you do this early in the trip so you have time to pick it up a few days later or have the item shipped to your next destination!
