Unveiling the Wonders of the Caldera: A Glass-Bottom Boat Journey
Drawn by the promise of a unique underwater view, I embarked on the Caldera Islands Tour. The glass-bottom boat adventure offered a thrilling blend of volcanic exploration, rejuvenating hot springs, and the serene beauty of Thirassia.
Setting Sail on the Calypso
The anticipation was palpable as I boarded the Calypso, a glass-bottom boat that promised a unique glimpse into the underwater world of the Caldera Islands. As a marine biologist, the allure of observing marine life through the glass bottom was irresistible. The boat departed from the old port in Fira, and as we set sail, the gentle rocking of the boat and the salty breeze set the tone for a day of exploration and discovery.
Our first destination was the Santorini Volcano, Nea Kameni Island. The journey was a short ten minutes, but it was enough time to take in the stunning views of the Aegean Sea. Upon arrival, I was eager to explore the active craters. The walk to the top was invigorating, and the sight of steam escaping from the earth was a reminder of the powerful forces at play beneath our feet. The smell of sulfur filled the air, adding to the otherworldly atmosphere. It was a humbling experience to stand on the edge of an active volcano, surrounded by the raw beauty of nature.
Diving into the Hot Springs
After our volcanic adventure, the Calypso continued to Palaia Kameni, home to the famous hot springs. The boat anchored just outside the small bay of Agios Nikolaos, and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to swim in the warm, mineral-rich waters. The swim to the hot springs was refreshing, and as I floated in the 30-35 degree waters, I felt the stress of everyday life melt away. The mud baths were an added bonus, believed to have healing properties for the skin. It was a rejuvenating experience, and I relished the chance to connect with nature in such a unique way.
The time spent at the hot springs was a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. As a lover of water sports, I appreciated the chance to swim in such a unique environment. The contrast between the warm springs and the cool sea was invigorating, and I emerged from the water feeling refreshed and revitalized.
Exploring Thirassia and Beyond
Our final stop was the island of Thirassia, where we had two hours to explore at our leisure. I chose to wander through the picturesque village of Manolas, with its narrow streets and stunning views of Santorini. The village was charming, and I enjoyed a leisurely lunch at a traditional tavern, savoring the local flavors and the warm hospitality of the islanders.
After lunch, I took a moment to swim in the crystal-clear waters of Korfos. The water was inviting, and as I swam, I marveled at the vibrant marine life that called this part of the world home. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place.
As we sailed back to the old port, the volcanic cliffs of Oia provided a breathtaking backdrop. The play of light and shadow on the cliffs was mesmerizing, and I couldn’t resist capturing the moment with my camera. The day had been a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, and as we disembarked, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Caldera Islands firsthand.
