Omodos - Charming stone-built Omodos village
Omodos village, located in a prominent wine-producing region of Cyprus, is bustling with activity. It showcases a superb example of Cyprus rural architecture and offers a variety of attractions, such as a traditional manually operated grape press. At its heart lies the historic Monastery of the Holy Cross, dating back to the second century AD. Tradition holds that St. Helen visited in the third century AD, leaving behind a piece of the rope used in Christ’s Crucifixion. Unfortunately, the monastery is no longer operational. Omodos serves as a gathering and resting spot, featuring excellent public restrooms and numerous tourist amenities. It takes up to thirty minutes by car to travel between Platy Valley and Omodos village. - Kelefos Bridge - The Kelephos medieval Venetian bridge beautifully merges Cyprus’s cultural heritage with its natural surroundings. Nestled within the vast Paphos Forest, it is home to thousands of wild sheep (mouflon). Tradition suggests the bridge was part of a route used by camel caravans to transport mined materials to Paphos port for export. Depending on the available time, visitors can enjoy a walk at the bridge and the nearby Platy Valley, dine at a village restaurant, participate in a wine tasting session, or explore other attractions on the itinerary. The trip is customizable. Possible Walks: If travelers are interested and time permits, a walk at Kelephos Medieval Venetian Bridge and the nearby Platy Valley can be arranged.
- Platy Valley - Platy Valley is one of the treasures of Cyprus’s natural landscape. The walk is customizable, ranging from a few kilometers to as much as twenty kilometers. The longest walk within the shaded valley is approximately sixteen kilometers. The walk in the Valley follows a dirt road alongside a stream, with the soothing sound of running water flowing year-round. The downside is the likelihood of encountering some cars on the dirt road, many of which are safari vehicles traveling through the Valley towards Kykkos Monastery. Winter walks offer the advantage of more water in the stream and fewer cars in the valley. Conversely, as summer approaches, Platy Valley becomes lush, compensating for the reduced stream flow and relative traffic. Walkers may encounter many pine and plane trees, an abundance of bracken, and even fig trees. It is possible to spot frogs, freshwater crabs, or mouflon in the valley.
