After being designated as a Cathedral on November 28, 1843, the church took on dual roles. It served as a spiritual sanctuary for the parishioners of St. Catherine and facilitated governmental ceremonies and procedures for the island until 1872, when Spanish Town was no longer the capital of Jamaica.

The sculpture depicts a male and female figure looking towards the sky, symbolizing their triumphant rise from the horrors of slavery.
