• Obuse-machi - Obuse (小布施) is a charming town in northern Nagano Prefecture, known for its picturesque town center. The famous Edo Period (1603-1867) woodblock artist, Hokusai, renowned for his ukiyo-e print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, spent his later years in Obuse with his patron and student, Takai Kozan, a wealthy local merchant and art lover. Many of the town’s attractions are linked to the artist and his patron, including the Hokusai Museum, the Takai Kozan Museum, and the painted ceiling of a local temple. Obuse is also celebrated for its seasonal produce, particularly the locally grown chestnuts. 1. Hokusai Museum Hokusai (北斎, 1760-1849) is one of the most celebrated Edo Period painters, famous for his ukiyo-e woodblock series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”, which includes the iconic “Great Wave off Kanagawa”. 2. Old Town During the Edo Period (1603-1867), Obuse thrived as a town rich in art and culture.
• Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park - The Jigokudani Monkey Park provides visitors with the unique opportunity to observe wild monkeys bathing in a natural hot spring. The park is home to Japanese Macaques, also known as Snow Monkeys. It is situated in the monkeys’ natural habitat, within the forests of the Jigokudani valley in Yamanouchi, near the onsen towns of Shibu and Yudanaka. The park features one man-made pool where the monkeys gather, located just a short walk from the park entrance. Visitors are likely to encounter monkeys along the path to the pool. The monkeys live in large social groups, and their interactions can be quite entertaining to watch.
• Zenko-ji Temple - Zenkoji Temple in Nagano is one of Japan’s most significant and popular temples. Founded in the 7th century, it houses the first Buddhist statue ever brought to Japan when Buddhism was introduced in the 6th century. The original statue is hidden, while a replica is displayed to the public every six years for a few weeks. The next opportunity to view the statue is anticipated in 2028. Zenkoji’s importance to Nagano’s development was crucial: many major Japanese cities have evolved from castle towns, harbor towns, or temple towns.
• Matsumoto Castle - Matsumoto Castle, originally called Fukashi Castle, is one of Japan’s top historic castles, alongside Himeji and Kumamoto. It served as the seat of Matsumoto Domain during the Edo Period under the Tokugawa shogunate. The castle is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Nagano Prefecture.
