From Waves to Peaks: My Aizkorri Trek Adventure
Trading the surfboard for hiking boots, I ventured into the Basque Highlands for the Aizkorri Trek. The allure of Gipuzkoa’s high meadows and forests promised an adventure unlike any other.
A Journey to the Roof of Gipuzkoa
As someone who spends most of his time riding the waves and soaking up the sun in the Caribbean, the idea of trekking through the high meadows and forests of Gipuzkoa was a thrilling change of pace. I found myself in Oñati, ready to embark on the Aizkorri Trek adventure. The day began with a warm welcome from Ernes, our guide, who was as passionate about the Basque culture as he was knowledgeable about the trails we were about to explore.
The journey started with a drive through the picturesque landscapes of Oñati, where Ernes shared fascinating stories about the region’s history and culture. His insights into the Basque way of life were as refreshing as the cool mountain air. Our first stop was the Santuario de Aranzazu, a stunning sanctuary perched on craggy rocks. The avant-garde architecture, with contributions from renowned Basque artists, was a sight to behold. It was a perfect prelude to the natural beauty that awaited us.
Ascending the Aizkorri Peaks
With the spiritual energy of the sanctuary still lingering, we began our ascent of Mount Aizkorri. The path led us through lush meadows dotted with ‘latxa’ sheep, their Rastafarian-like wool adding a whimsical touch to the landscape. As we climbed higher, the terrain transformed into rugged rocks, and the sky was filled with the majestic flight of peregrine falcons and griffon vultures.
The climb was invigorating, a stark contrast to the gentle ebb and flow of the ocean waves I’m accustomed to. Ernes’s enthusiasm was infectious, and his tales of local legends added an element of mystique to the journey. At the summit, we were rewarded with panoramic views that took my breath away. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the beauty that lies beyond the shores.
A Taste of Basque Delights
After soaking in the views, it was time for a well-deserved rest and a picnic featuring local specialties. The Idiazabal cheese, cured sausages, and tuna from a nearby port were a delightful feast for the senses. Sharing this meal with fellow adventurers, exchanging stories and laughter, was a highlight of the trek.
The descent offered a choice: to explore the San Adrian tunnel on our own or retrace our steps with Ernes. I opted for the tunnel, intrigued by its historical significance as the ‘hole to hell.’ Armed with a walkie-talkie and Ernes’s guidance, I navigated the path with ease, marveling at the natural cave formations.
As we returned to the starting point, a glass of local wine awaited us, a fitting end to an unforgettable day. The Aizkorri Trek was more than just a hike; it was an exploration of culture, history, and the breathtaking beauty of the Basque Country. It’s an adventure I highly recommend to anyone looking to experience the world beyond the waves.
