A Journey Through Time: The Bishop Museum Experience

When I first heard about the Bishop Museum in Oahu, I knew it was a must-visit for our family trip. As a former elementary school teacher turned travel writer, I have a soft spot for educational experiences that are both fun and engaging for the whole family. The Bishop Museum promised to be just that, with its rich displays of Hawaiian history and Pacific culture. Discovering Hawaiian History

Our adventure began in the J. M. Long Gallery, where we were immediately captivated by the Kū a Lanakila! Expressions of Sovereignty in Early Territorial Hawaiʻi exhibit. The kids were fascinated by the forty-foot-long outrigger canoe made of koa wood, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate felt versions of traditional feather capes. It was a perfect introduction to the complex history of Hawaii, and it sparked many questions from my curious little ones.

Next, we ventured into the Hawaiian Hall, a three-story chamber filled with treasures. On the first floor, Kai Ākea, we encountered statues of Hawaiian gods and spirits, some adorned with dog teeth and human hair. The kids were wide-eyed as they took in the art panels depicting the Hawaiian creation myth and the life-size reproduction of a grass hut. It was a fantastic way to immerse ourselves in the lore of ancient Hawaiian religion.

Exploring Everyday Life

The second floor, Wao Kanaka, offered a glimpse into the daily lives of ancient Hawaiians. My husband and I were particularly intrigued by the display cases showcasing fishing hooks, nets, and baskets. Our kids, on the other hand, were drawn to the pieces of jewelry made from turtle shells and whale bone. They even tried their hand at some interactive exhibits, learning about the significance of tattoos, haircuts, and the phases of the moon in Hawaiian culture.

As we moved to the third floor, Wao Lani, we delved into the history of the islands from the rule of chiefs like Kamehameha the Great to American statehood. The stories of powerful figures such as Queen Liliʻokolani and Duke Kahanamoku were brought to life through royal attire, paintings, and other artifacts. It was a captivating journey through time that left us all in awe of Hawaii’s rich heritage.

A Family Adventure

Beyond the main exhibits, the Bishop Museum offered even more to explore. The Picture Hall, with its paintings of prominent Hawaiian figures, was a hit with my husband, while the kids enjoyed the rotating 3D picture boxes. We also spent time in the Pacific Hall, learning about other Polynesian cultures, and the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center, where the live lava melting show was a highlight for our little science enthusiasts.

Our visit to the Bishop Museum was a fantastic family adventure that combined education with entertainment. It was a day well spent, filled with laughter, learning, and bonding.
