Approximately 4,500 years ago, migrations into the Pacific commenced, and the traditions of the Seven Sisters (Matariki) were brought to the Pacific by the Polynesians. In early June, at dawn, Matariki, the provider of food, and her seven daughters ascend the shoulder of Rangi, marking the start of the Maori New Year. During this period, all the posts supporting Rangi become visible. These posts are stars and form the foundation of Maori astronomy. Simultaneously, in the south, the Waka of Tama-rereti is anchored in the sky’s eyebrow. The stars of this waka are fundamental to Polynesian navigation. This presentation delves into the ancient legends and significance of Matariki, as well as the physical characteristics of this star cluster. Reservations are required.
