Initially constructed around 1300 as a small fortification to oversee access to the island, it was expanded into a walled town and became the island’s capital by the early 15th century. The Ottoman Empire seized it in 1479, and a century later, they reconstructed and enlarged it, giving it much of its current form. By the 1670s, a thriving town had developed outside the castle walls.
