A Royal Introduction to Rwanda

As the sun began to rise over Kigali, I found myself eagerly anticipating the journey ahead. The allure of the Nyanza King’s Palace Museum was irresistible, promising a deep dive into the rich tapestry of Rwanda’s monarchical history. The drive to Nyanza was a visual feast, with the rolling hills of Rwanda unfurling like a lush green carpet. Upon arrival, the grandeur of the King’s Palace was immediately apparent. The architecture, a blend of traditional Rwandan design and colonial influences, stood as a testament to a bygone era.

Inside, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of King Mutara III Rudahigwa. The exhibits were meticulously curated, each artifact telling a story of power, tradition, and the eventual abolition of the monarchy in the early 1960s. As I wandered through the halls, I couldn’t help but reflect on the resilience of the Rwandan people, who have preserved their history with such care and reverence.

Walking Among the Giants

The next leg of the journey took me to the Nyungwe National Park, home to the famous canopy walkway. Suspended 60 meters above the forest floor, the walkway offered a bird’s-eye view of the park’s breathtaking biodiversity. As I stepped onto the swaying bridge, a sense of exhilaration washed over me. The air was thick with the scent of rain-soaked earth and the calls of distant birds.

Walking among the treetops, I felt a profound connection to the natural world. The final chapter of this adventure was a trek to see the chimpanzees of Nyungwe.
