• Chena Lake Recreation Area - During the journey along the Chena River, travelers will pass under the Chena River Dam, a distinctive feature of the trip. Constructed in 1979 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the dam serves as a flood control measure to safeguard Fairbanks and nearby regions from seasonal flooding.

Going beneath this impressive structure provides a unique viewpoint and an opportunity to closely engage with a significant part of Interior Alaska’s history.

The journey begins at the Nordale boat launch, where the group will travel upstream on the Chena River by jet boat. Upon reaching the Chena River Dam, the motor is turned off and replaced with a quiet electric trolling motor, allowing the river to gently guide the boat downstream. This is when the adventure truly unfolds, with the absence of engine noise highlighting the natural sounds of the river and the surrounding wilderness.

It’s a common sight to observe moose grazing in the shallows, beavers busy along the banks, and birds such as bald eagles and ducks. Occasionally, black bears may also be spotted as the boat drifts down the river. Although wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, this tranquil section of the river is an ideal habitat, and animals are frequently seen.

Drifting downstream offers an excellent chance to fish, so fishing gear is available on board for guests interested in trying their luck on the picturesque Chena River. A valid Alaska one-day fishing license ($15) is necessary for anyone wishing to fish.
