- Rio Istian - Spend a nice day kayaking along the coast of Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua until you reach the mouth of the Istián River. The river and marshlands run through the center of the isthmus almost cutting the island in two. The Istián River area is a marshy terrain on the western side of the isthmus between Maderas and Concepción. It is only accessible by water and is a perfect place to see all kinds of wildlife as it is a refuge for several species such as birds, turtles, alligators, butterflies and monkeys.
