- Devil’s Hole State Park - Meet the guide at Devil’s Hole State Park, where free parking is available (note: no oversized RV parking). The meeting point is at the restroom building located at the park’s north end.
Devil’s Hole Park provides stunning views of the Niagara River, the New York Power Authority Dam, and the Lewiston/Queenston Bridge to Canada. The tour will begin with a brief overview and a discussion on hiking safety.
The hike starts with a descent of over 400 stone steps into the Niagara River Gorge, followed by a southward path towards Devil’s Hole.
- Devil’s Hole State Park - Initially, the hiking path is wide and flat, but it can become muddy after rain. As the trail narrows, it becomes rocky and slopes into the gorge. The guide will offer tips on safely navigating this section. Upon reaching Devil’s Hole, the historical significance of the area will be discussed.
- Whirlpool State Park - The hike continues towards the Whirlpool, where participants will learn about the old Niagara River Gorge Railway. The trail includes navigating large rocks and tree roots, with views of rock slides and the Niagara River. As the group approaches the Whirlpool, the sound of Class 5 rapids becomes evident. There will be stops for photos and water breaks, capturing the swirling aqua-blue water.
- Whirlpool State Park - At Butterfly Rock Landing, enjoy free time for personal exploration and experience the powerful twists and churns of the rapids. Relax by the blue-green aqua river water, watch, and wave to the jet boats or the Aero Car above.
The guide will gladly use your phone or camera to take group photos.
- Whirlpool State Park - The group will exit the gorge by ascending a different 400+ step stone staircase to the gorge’s rim. This is the most challenging part of the hike, but rest stops will be taken as needed.
Upon reaching the gorge’s rim, the guide will lead the group to an overlook for a top view of the Whirlpool. There will also be time for a bathroom break before returning to Devil’s Hole.
- Devil’s Hole State Park - The return to Devil’s Hole parking lot involves an easy walk along the upper rim of the Niagara River gorge. Stops will be made to view the jet boats and take photos of the gorge and river.
There is also an option to explore more of Whirlpool Park and return to Devil’s Hole independently. Alternatively, hike or take a free bus 3 miles south to The Falls and return by the free bus to Devil’s Hole parking lot. Ask the guide for directions.
