From the market, the traditional shopping basket, “Kiondo,” is carried to the bus stop to board a ‘matatu,’ the most popular form of transportation in Kenya.
The route passes through Junction Mall on the way to the house. If any ingredients are missing, a quick stop at the stores is made.
Upon arrival at the house, hands are washed, and any jewelry that might interfere with cooking is removed. A cup of tea is enjoyed while discussing the meal plan, as it is customary in Kenya to welcome guests with tea. After discussing the meal plan and addressing any questions, traditional attire is provided by wrapping the head and waist. Men in the group are encouraged to participate in cutting the meat, as is customary in Kenyan households, but they are welcome to engage in the entire cooking process.
Once the meals are prepared, everyone gathers with the family to enjoy the food. Afterwards, some food is packed for later, and guests are dropped off at their hotel.

Kenya’s transport system is renowned as one of the most fascinating in Africa, largely due to the ‘party buses’ known as Matatus. These Matatus are a vital part of Kenyan culture and serve as the primary mode of public transport in cities like Nairobi. On this tour, participants will have the opportunity to ride a Matatu to the house where the cooking takes place. Matatus are famous for their vivid and intricate decorations, loud music, onboard PlayStation consoles, DJs, lively conductors, and their dynamic driving style.
At the house, participants will join in cooking popular Kenyan dishes, and later enjoy the meal with the family members present. Additionally, some food will be packed for participants to take with them for later enjoyment.
