- Cypress Grove and Greenwood Cemeteries - This section includes three cemeteries. The tour begins at GREENWOOD CEMETERY, a breathtakingly beautiful site with impressive graves and statues. Visitors will explore several celebrity graves and learn intriguing stories about the unique burial practices in New Orleans, which differ from the rest of the United States. Following Greenwood, the tour proceeds to CYPRESS GROVE CEMETERY, a Protestant burial ground, where more celebrity graves and the two largest and most monumental graves in New Orleans can be found. Guests will enjoy the captivating (and humorous) tale of the rivalry between the two families who constructed these graves. The tour also includes a visit to the GATES OF JUDAH CEMETERY, a Jewish cemetery, where guests will discover how Jewish burial customs in New Orleans differ from Catholic and Protestant practices.
- Hurricane Katrina Memorial - This site is not only a beautiful memorial for hurricane victims but also serves as a cemetery for 80 locals who tragically perished in the 2005 hurricane. Guests will hear the poignant stories of their lives and the intriguing detective tale of how their bodies were “lost” by local authorities, only to be “re-discovered” years later in a hidden local freezer. They were eventually given a respectful and dignified burial.
- St. Patrick Cemetery - This category actually comprises THREE different cemeteries. At SAINT PATRICK #1 CEMETERY, guests will visit the oldest Irish Catholic Cemetery in the city, established by immigrants who fled the Irish Potato Famine. As the first generation of Irish New Orleanians, they constructed modest graves in a disorganized fashion due to poverty. Across the street, ST. PATRICK #2 CEMETERY, built a generation later, showcases what newfound wealth in the Irish-American community meant for cemetery design, featuring grand, monumental, and ornate graves. Guests will also learn about the struggles faced by the Irish community in the city’s early days. Nearby, CHARITY HOSPITAL CEMETERY, a mass burial site for yellow fever victims, offers guests a glimpse into the dark and eerie history of why yellow fever was so rampant in New Orleans.
