Bandavgarh is a relatively new National Park with a rich history. Nestled among the Vindhya hills of Madhya Pradesh, covering an area of 168 square miles (437 square kilometers), it offers diverse habitats and a high density of wildlife, including a significant number of tigers. This region is also known as the White Tiger territory. White tigers have been found in the old state of Rewa for many years. Maharaja Martand Singh captured the last known one in 1951. This white tiger, Mohun, is now preserved and displayed in the Palace of the Maharaja of Rewa. Before becoming a National Park, the forests around Bandavgarh were maintained as a Shikargah, or game preserve, by the Maharaja of Rewa. The Maharaja and his guests engaged in hunting, but otherwise, the wildlife was well protected. It was considered auspicious for the Maharaja of Rewa to shoot 109 tigers. His Highness Maharaja Venkat Raman Singh shot 111 tigers by 1914.
Bandavgarh is renowned for its tigers, but it also hosts a wide variety of other wildlife. The undergrowth is not as dense as in some northern terai forests, but the best time to observe the park’s inhabitants is during the summer months when water becomes scarce and the undergrowth thins out.
