Galle is a city on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, renowned for Galle Fort, the fortified old city established by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone seawalls, expanded by the Dutch, enclose car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences. Notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church. Galle Lighthouse stands on the fort’s southeast tip. Built by the Dutch starting in 1663, Galle’s core is the Fort, a walled enclave surrounded on three sides by the ocean. While tourism now plays a significant role in the local economy, this unique city remains a vibrant community.

The name originates from a mythical story dating back to the time of kings, where a demon named Bem ruled this river (tota = riverbank). Bentota is home to several world-renowned hotels and the famous Sri Lankan jeweler Aida. It also offers the ancient healing art of Ayurveda and is known for producing Toddy, an alcoholic beverage made from coconut nectar. The city’s population is estimated to be between 25,000-50,000.
