Enjoyable and educational - The guide was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot not only about the lives of slaves at Belle Meade but also about slavery in the wider sense. Most visitors seemed not to take this tour. They missed out!

Mom, dad & teen - Totally worth it, the guides are researchers and experts on the subject matter. The tour is not too long & you can take all the time you want to explore and learn more about the site.

Great history lesson - Our guide Melissa was amazing and we loved that she made it interesting by asking us questions and our thoughts about certain situations. She definitely knew her stuff. Would highly recommend this as a must stop to family and friends.

Very enlightening - We highly recommend this tour if you are open to hearing the stories of life as experienced by the enslaved persons who lived at Belle Meade. The information, and thoughts to ponder, were presented in a very factual, informative way. What makes the Belle Meade stories different from other plantation tours is the focus on the demands on the slaves required to run a thoroughbred horse farm, rather than a cash crop farm. The narratives were interesting because few slave stories are told from experiences in an equestrian setting where the horses were treated 10 times better than the humans living there. The whole tour was very enlightening and well done. Our only disappointment was that we waited outside on the steps of the Harding Cabin for 20 min in front of of a sign that said, “Journey Tour Begins Here,” assuming that would be the first structure we toured. Surprisingly, the guide spoke to us a good five minutes at that spot and told us we could come back later to look inside and marches us off to the blacksmith. Unfortunately, we were on a tight schedule with other tours we had booked so missed seeing inside and could easily have toured it during our 20 min of waiting prior to the tour. If you only have time/money for one tour, book this over the house tour.

Historical overview of plantation life. Glamour vs. Gloom - The historical overview was mostly from the perspective of the owners with very little input from the enslaved. It outlined the harsh reality of slave life. It also provided a sharp contrast of the opulence of plantation ownership vs slavery, oppression, and all types of physical violence and control.

Informative - Informative. I appreciated seeing the historical points related to enslaved persons on the Belle Meade estate, and was eager to learn of their reality, but I didn't find the interactive learning questions and dialogue pushed by the docent helpful.
