It originated from Kinshozan-ji Temple, constructed in 728 (the 5th year of the Jinki era) to honor the late crown prince, Imperial Prince Motoi, son of Emperor Shomu. Although the current reconstruction from 1692 is only two-thirds the size of the original temple hall, Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall), Todaiji’s main hall, remains one of the largest wooden structures globally. The 15-meter-tall seated Buddha, representing Vairocana and flanked by two Bodhisattvas, resides in this temple.
- Todai-ji Temple - Tōdai-ji is a Buddhist temple situated in Nara, Japan. Established in the early 8th century during the Nara period, it is one of Japan’s most renowned and historically significant temples. The temple’s main hall, Daibutsuden, is among the largest wooden buildings worldwide and houses a massive bronze statue of the Buddha, known as the Daibutsu or Great Buddha. This statue stands over 15 meters tall and weighs approximately 500 tons, making it one of the largest bronze statues globally. Tōdai-ji also includes several other significant structures, such as the Hokke-do Hall, which contains important Buddhist scriptures, and the Nigatsu-do Hall, known for its stunning views of Nara city. The temple is encircled by a vast park, home to numerous wild sika deer, considered sacred in Japanese culture. Visitors can feed and interact with the deer in the park.
