Soaring Over the Salish Sea: A Seaplane Adventure from Nanaimo to Vancouver
For my 60th birthday, my husband surprised me with a seaplane flight from Nanaimo to Vancouver. Join me as I recount this unforgettable journey through the skies, where breathtaking vistas and nostalgic memories intertwined.
A Journey Through the Skies
As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips and a heart full of nostalgia, I have always been drawn to the open road and the stories it holds. But this time, I decided to take to the skies for a change. My husband and I were visiting family in Vancouver, a city that has become a second home to us over the years. Each visit, I found myself mesmerized by the seaplanes dotting the harbor, their graceful takeoffs and landings a dance I longed to join. So, for my 60th birthday, my husband surprised me with a round-trip ticket for the seaplane flight from Nanaimo to Vancouver.
The anticipation was palpable as we approached the Nanaimo Harbour, the historic Bastion standing proudly nearby. The seaplane, a 13-seater DH3, awaited us, its sleek form promising an adventure unlike any other. As we ascended into the sky, the world below transformed into a tapestry of greens and blues, the Gulf Islands scattered like jewels across the Salish Sea. It was a sight that stirred memories of my childhood road trips, the vast landscapes of America unfurling before us, each mile a new story waiting to be told.
The Dance of the Pacific Northwest
The flight was a symphony of sights and sounds, the gentle hum of the engine a soothing backdrop to the breathtaking vistas unfolding outside our windows. At an altitude of just 1000 feet, we were close enough to feel a part of the landscape, yet high enough to appreciate its grandeur. The Gulf Islands, with their beaches and forests, reminded me of the small towns I had visited in my youth, each one a hidden gem with its own unique charm.
As we approached Vancouver, the city’s iconic skyline came into view, nestled against the majestic mountains that have always captivated me. The bustling activity of the harbor below was a testament to the vibrant energy of the Pacific Northwest, a region that has always held a special place in my heart. The ferries gliding across the water and the sailboats navigating the waves were reminiscent of the highways and byways I have traveled, each journey a new chapter in my lifelong love affair with travel.
A Memorable Landing
The return flight to Vancouver was particularly special, as we were only three passengers on board. This intimate setting allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience, the landscape stretching out before us in all its glory. As we descended over Stanley Park, the view of Burrard Bay and the Vancouver West End was nothing short of spectacular. It was a moment that will forever be etched in my memory, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the world around us.
The landing in Vancouver Harbour was smooth and graceful, a fitting end to a journey that had been both exhilarating and reflective. As we disembarked, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to see the world from a new perspective, to experience the thrill of flight and the serenity of the skies. This seaplane adventure was a testament to the power of travel to inspire and transform, a reminder that there is always more to explore, more stories to uncover, and more memories to create.
