You need to get a permit to visit Welwitschia Drive and one for the Moon Landscape. There are also a few smaller examples at the Petrified Forest about 40km from Khorixas. More info. Although the plant looks as if it has many leaves, it has only two, but as it is so old, it gets shredded by the wind.

If you’re in pursuit of witnessing welwitschias, proceed eastwards on the Welwitschia Drive until you reach the Lunar Landscape of eroded hills and valleys, sculpted by the Swakop River. Here, you might consider a short 12km round-trip north to the farm and oasis of Goanikontes, established in 1848. Nestled beside the Swakop River and surrounded by magnificent desert mountains, it makes for a picturesque picnic spot. Goanikontes is an awe-inspiring resort and camping area situated in the lunar landscape of Namibia, within the Namib Naukluft and Dorob National Parks.
