With the city’s skyline as a backdrop, you can spot lions, rhinos, buffaloes, hyenas, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, impalas, and more. Although downtown Nairobi is just a few miles away, this is far from a city zoo or theme park. Despite being the oldest (established in 1946) and one of the smallest parks in Kenya, sightings of lions and hyenas are common. The park is home to over 400 bird species, including the majestic Ostrich. ‘Kifaru’ is Swahili for rhinoceros, and the park supports the largest population of endangered black rhinos in Kenya, earning it the nickname ‘Kifaru Ark.’ As the rhino population grows, the park has become a source for supplying these endangered animals to other parks across the country.
- Giraffe Centre - Located in Lang’ata, about 20 kilometers from central Nairobi, the Giraffe Centre was established to protect the endangered giraffe species native to East Africa’s grasslands. Founded in 1979 by Jock Leslie Melville, the Kenyan grandson of a Scottish Earl, and his wife Betty, the center began with the capture of two baby giraffes to start a breeding program on their Langata property, now the site of the present Centre. The program has been highly successful, leading to the introduction of several breeding pairs of Rothschild Giraffes into Kenyan national parks. By 1983, enough funds had been raised to establish the Giraffe Visitor’s Center as a tourist destination just outside Nairobi. The main attraction for both school children and visitors is feeding giraffes from a raised observation platform.
- Karen Blixen Museum - This museum is the former African home of Danish author Karen Blixen, renowned for her book ‘Out of Africa,’ which details life on the estate. It is open daily from 0930 to 1800 hours, including weekends and public holidays. Visitors can join guided tours featuring rooms decorated in the original style and with props from the 1985 film. The grounds, which include original equipment from the coffee farm, are also open for tours. The tour concludes with a drop-off at the hotel or airport.
