- Nairobi National Museum - Begin your day with a visit to the Nairobi National Museum, located on Museum Hill, just a short distance from the city center. The museum showcases Kenya’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Admire Ahmed, the enormous elephant who became a symbol of Kenya during the 1980s poaching crisis, and was protected around the clock by President Jomo Kenyatta. Explore the museum’s permanent collection, including the Hall of Kenya, ethnological exhibits like the remarkable Kalenjin cloak made from Sykes Monkeys’ skins, and a mosaic map of Kenya crafted from the country’s butterflies. The next hall features the Birds of East Africa exhibit, a vast gallery with at least 900 stuffed specimens, followed by the Great Hall of Mammals. The Cradle of Humankind is a highlight, with the Hominid Skull Room showcasing an extraordinary collection of skulls, described as ‘the single most important collection of early human fossils in the world.’
- Kenyatta International Conference Center - Our next stop is the iconic 28-story building located along Harambee Avenue in Nairobi’s City Square. The skyscraper’s rooftop offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the city center and its horizons, allowing one to truly appreciate its beauty and intricate design. We will then make our way into the Central Business District, where your guide will share real-time stories of Nairobi’s history, both pre- and post-independence. We will walk through the city, visiting various landmarks, including KICC and Kipande House, among others.
- August 7th Memorial Park - We will continue our tour along Parliament Road to Harambee Avenue, reaching the August 7th Memorial Park, the site of a bomb blast. Born from tragedy, the park stands as a symbol of peace and hope amidst today’s global challenges. It is located where the former United States Embassy once stood. Here, you will learn and appreciate the importance of global peace as you visit the memorial museum, which honors those who lost their lives during the tragic event on August 7th, 1998. The center also shares stories of survivors and those whose lives were forever changed by the 1998 terrorist bombing of the US embassy. After reflecting on the importance of peace, we will take a quick tour of downtown Nairobi to experience the daily life of ordinary Kenyans. Our city tour will then proceed to the beads women’s factory.
- KOBE TOUGH Beads & Leather - This pottery company creates some of the world’s most beautiful beads. You will witness firsthand all the stages from start to finish. It is a unique factory as it employs single mothers from impoverished neighborhoods, providing them with a livelihood to support their families. It serves as a women empowerment center for the community. The center was established by women who previously worked for Kazuri Beads Factory, which closed during the pandemic. This provided them with a reprieve, allowing them to continue supporting their families.
- Utamaduni Craft Centre - After the exciting beads factory tour, we will continue to the Utamaduni Crafts Centre. As the best African craft shop in Nairobi, Utamaduni is a must-visit on the way to some of the exciting venues in Nairobi’s green suburb of Karen/Langata, known for the famous writer Karen Blixen’s original farm with stunning views of the Ngong Hills. Incorporate a visit to this unique house of crafts during your Nairobi visit. The shop, a converted Kikuyu house with 18 shops, is a treasure trove of African crafts, antiques, and art, with friendly staff to assist and help with packing or shipping if needed. After shopping, enjoy refreshments in the large, beautiful garden restaurant, and if you are a bird watcher, the many exotic birds will keep you entertained. Ensure Utamaduni is part of your Kenya holiday itinerary.
- Bomas of Kenya - After lunch (at your own expense), we will proceed to experience Kenya’s rich cultural heritage. Enjoy the vibrant culture from the 53 ethnic communities in Kenya through traditional folklore dances and an informative session as we explore and visit different homesteads to see the real-life of our people. Bomas of Kenya primarily preserves, maintains, and promotes the rich, diverse cultural values of all ethnic communities. Daily performances include a selection of more than 30 traditional dances from different ethnic groups in Kenya, with one of the most impressive performances being the Samburu and Maasai warriors. End of tour.
