The Lovers of the Ngong - I’m very much a Karen Blixen fan and wanted to revisit the museum after seeing it 34 years ago; I was delighted to see so much detail surrounding her legacy still alive and thriving. Then we were driven to the grave of Denys Fitch-Hatton to complete the loop of one of the great love stories of that era; he had told Karen this is where he wanted to be buried - their secret hiding place nestled in the Ngong Hills with the view of the plains below. We had the pleasure of speaking with Kamante’s great grand daughter Damaris who is now the caretaker of the gravesite. She has landscaped the plot into an English-type garden while leaving some of it wild, a fitting tribute to a great hunter, friend and lover who lived on his own terms. Though some may see the plot as being “overgrown,” the jungle and farms now obscuring the views, I see it as an enduring legacy of a man who could never be tamed.
