• Wright Brothers National Memorial - Situated in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, the Wright Brothers National Memorial is not merely a monument; it’s the birthplace of history and innovation. Celebrating the Wright brothers’ groundbreaking first powered flight and their enduring spirit of exploration, this iconic site invites all to appreciate its historical significance and the dawn of aviation.

• Avalon Pier - To visit Avalon Pier, turn right onto E. Sportsman Drive ahead. This 440-foot-long wooden pier offers a spectacular ocean view and is surrounded by numerous restaurants and shops. It’s also a great spot for fishing!

• Wright Brother’s Garage Monument - Interested in seeing where the Wright Brothers constructed one of their early gliders? Like many great American inventors, they began in a garage! Directions will be provided shortly to visit the site where it all started.

• Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve - Driving through the town of Kitty Hawk, a name likely familiar. Historians credit this town as the site of Wilbur and Orville’s first flight. However, the brothers actually flew a few miles south of the town line, in Kill Devil Hills. Quite a name, indeed! Since Kill Devil Hills wasn’t an official town in 1903, Kitty Hawk receives the credit for Orville and Wilbur’s achievement!

• Duck Town Boardwalk - On the left is the Duck Town Park Boardwalk. This picturesque park features waterfront trails, shops, restaurants, and more. To visit and stretch your legs, turn left at the “Town of Duck” sign. Otherwise, continue straight.

• Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary - Approaching is the Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary, encompassing 2,600 acres of preserved land. This area is home to hundreds of bird species, though it would have hosted many more if not for the hunting craze that swept through this part of the Outer Banks over a century ago.

• Corolla - Entering the town of Corolla, to the right, beyond the houses, lies the seemingly endless stretch of sand known as Corolla Beach. The local population is around 500, but in summer, it swells into the thousands! Visitors flock here from everywhere to enjoy the small-town charm, watersports, and the herd of wild horses.

• Currituck Beach Lighthouse - The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is just a few minutes away. Directions will be provided when it’s time to turn if you wish to visit.
  On December 1, 1875, engineers completed this “first-order” lighthouse. “First order” signifies the largest type of lighthouse. The Fresnel lens at the top of the tower is about eight and a half feet tall and approximately six feet wide! Its light is visible from 21 miles away! The lighthouse itself stands 162 feet tall.

• Whalehead Club - In the late 1800s and early 1900s, this area became a popular destination for affluent Americans seeking hunting adventures. Edward Collings Knight, Jr., heir to fortunes in sugar, railroads, and steamships, along with his second wife, purchased a vast tract of land here in 1920 and began constructing a house. The resulting home, known as the Whalehead Club, is a 22,000 square foot residence designed in the Art Nouveau style. The Knights used it and offered it to their friends as a hunting lodge.
