- Takayama - Discover the charm of Edo-period Japan in Takayama and the UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go village. Enjoy lunch at your leisure in Takayama, a town brimming with fascinating attractions and serving as the gateway to the Japanese Alps. Don’t miss the Sanmachi Suji District, featuring three streets in the heart of Takayama’s Edo town, just east of the Miya-gawa River. These streets are adorned with traditional houses, shops, restaurants, sake breweries, and cafes.
- Koshiyama - Delight in a delicious Japanese-style teppanyaki set lunch at the esteemed Koshiyama restaurant in Shirakawa-go. Savor the local specialty, Japanese Pork ‘Hida buta,’ raised in Gifu Prefecture and celebrated for its rich marbling and exquisite taste. These offerings showcase the authentic flavors of the region, providing a delightful culinary experience.
- Shirakawa-go - Next, visit the renowned Shirakawa-go to explore the historic gassho-zukuri (thatch-roofed) style houses that grace this mountain village. Surrounded by rice paddies, you can hear the gentle sounds of insects and birds if you listen closely. Situated in a mountainous area that was isolated from the world for a long time, these villages with their Gassho-style houses thrived on mulberry tree cultivation and silkworm rearing. The large houses with their steeply pitched thatched roofs are unique in Japan. Despite economic changes, the villages of Ogimachi, Ainokura, and Suganuma are remarkable examples of a traditional lifestyle perfectly adapted to the environment and people’s social and economic conditions.
- Deai Bridge - The Encounter Bridge, made of concrete, is narrow and swaying, offering an exhilarating experience. It serves as a vital link between the parking lot and Shirakawa-go.
- Shiroyama Tenshukaku Observation Deck - The view from the observation deck in the countryside, overlooking the valley scenery of forest-covered hills, rice fields, and village farms, is stunning. It costs 300 yen one way by shuttle bus, but it’s a 10-minute walk.
- Shirakawago Tajimake Yosan Sericulture Museum - A venue where you can explore the history of sericulture (silkworm raising) in Shirakawa-go.
- Shirakawa-go World Heritage Site Gassho Style Preservation Trust - This is a conserved area featuring wooden houses built in the gassho style in the late 19th century.
- Hatotani Hachiman Shrine - Enjoy a wonderful visit to this powerful shrine, which feels as if it is imbued with the presence of a real deity.
