The valley hosts a variety of rare and endangered plants and animals, which the guide will highlight along the route. Perhaps the most remarkable species residing in this area is the Japanese Giant Salamander, one of the largest amphibians in the world. This gentle giant is a protected species and recognized as a Natural Treasure of Japan. With some luck, participants might spot these giant salamanders swimming in the river during the hike. Additionally, a visit to the Japan Salamander Center at the trailhead ensures that everyone will have the opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures firsthand.
- Soni Highland - After leaving the valley, the adventure continues to the breathtaking Soni Highlands, where expansive fields of Japanese pampas grass sway gracefully in the breeze against the backdrop of Mt. Kuroso—one of Japan’s 300 famous mountains. This 40-hectare grassland is not only a spectacular sight but also an essential component of the local ecosystem. Each year, the grasses are meticulously managed through controlled burns to preserve the land and maintain ecological balance.
As participants stroll along a meandering walking trail through the highlands, they will be able to capture stunning views of the surrounding valley. The guide will be available to take photos, ensuring that friends and family back home will be envious of the time spent in Japan.
