This gentle giant is a protected species and recognized as a Natural Treasure of Japan. With some luck, participants might spot these giant salamanders swimming in the river during the hike. Additionally, a visit to the Japan Salamander Center at the trailhead ensures that everyone will have the opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures firsthand.
