Situated on a rocky hill above ancient Corinth, Acrocorinth Castle stands as one of Greece’s most formidable fortifications. With origins tracing back to antiquity, the castle has been a bastion for various civilizations, including the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans. As the vast walls, ancient gates, and breathtaking viewpoints are explored, history vividly comes to life. Palamidi Castle - Palamidi Castle – The Venetian Masterpiece

The next destination is Palamidi Castle, a Venetian fortress that majestically overlooks Nafplio. Constructed in the early 18th century, Palamidi is renowned for its 999 steps leading to its well-preserved bastions and stunning vantage points. (No worries—there’s also a road to the entrance!) Bourtzi - Bourtzi Fortress – The Floating Castle

The final stop is Bourtzi Fortress, a quaint Venetian castle situated on an islet in Nafplio’s harbor. Originally constructed in the 15th century to protect the city from pirate raids, this charming fortress later served as a residence for executioners and even as a luxury hotel! Although access to the interior may be limited, the sight of this enchanting fortress floating in the sea is truly magical.

Nafplio - After exploring the castles, there is free time to enjoy Nafplio at leisure. Stroll through its charming alleys, explore its elegant neoclassical mansions, visit local shops, or relax at one of the seafront cafés. As evening falls, settle into accommodation in Nafplio and savor a traditional Greek dinner by the sea.

Mystras

Archaeological Site of Mystra - After breakfast, the journey departs from Nafplio towards the historic region of Laconia, where the legendary Mystras awaits. This UNESCO-listed Byzantine city is one of Greece’s most remarkable medieval sites. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Taygetos, Mystras was once a thriving cultural and religious hub.

As the well-preserved palaces, monasteries, churches, and fortifications are explored, it’s like stepping back in time to the era of Byzantine emperors and scholars. Highlights include the Despot’s Palace, the Monastery of Pantanassa, and the Church of Agios Dimitrios, where the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos, was crowned. Sparta - From Mystras, the journey continues to Sparta, the home of the ancient warrior society famed for its discipline and military prowess. While little remains of the ancient city, visiting the Statue of Leonidas, the legendary Spartan king, and the Archaeological Museum of Sparta provides insight into the history of this powerful civilization.
