The Market Common is situated in Myrtle Beach’s Market Common District, which was once the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, closed in March 1993. The remarkable transformation showcases one of the finest military base redevelopment projects in the nation.
While few original structures from the Air Force base, which opened in 1956, remain, the streets are named after the heroes who shaped its history and that of the World War II Army Air Corps airfield and bombing range that existed here from 1941 to 1947.
Historical markers are scattered throughout the Market Common District, narrating the stories of these heroes, the military buildings that once stood, and the significant events involving the men and women stationed in Myrtle Beach.
