Excellent tour given by a sensitive, knowledgeable guide - My family and friends were very glad that we took the “Dachau Small-Group Half-Day Tour from Munich” with James, our guide. Dachau is a series of empty buildings and barracks surrounding an empty ‘parade ground’ where prisoners were forced to line up and stand at attention to be counted. There is a visitor building but it was impossible to read all the captions under each picture that you passed, so it was likely you could go through the whole visit and not feel moved by the experience. That is why I think it was very important that we were guided through the memorial site with someone who could bring the Dachau concentration camp to life for us. James was extremely knowledgeable about the period leading up to and during the rise of Hitler and Nazism, and he spent most of the tour sharing stories and describing what was going on in Germany and around the world at that time to explain how something like building a complex of concentration and death camps could have come about. He has met holocaust survivors and been personally touched by their stories. He seemed very passionate about the suffering of all those people caught up in the holocaust, and he went from building to building with us describing the horrors, humiliation and suffering that took place in each location. Even as we were leaving Dachau and waiting for the bus in a covered area out of the rain, he pointed out an ad on the wall and explained to us about another holocaust memorial called “Stumbling Stones” which are small, brass plaques installed into the sidewalk in front of the former homes and businesses of those who died in the Holocaust. It was just a comment made in passing since the ad was there, but later in our travels we came across one in Salzburg and another one in Vienna and were glad that he had taken the opportunity to explain to us what they were so that we could stop and appreciate their significance. I can’t imagine going to Dachau without a guide like James who could share his sensitivity along with his historical knowledge to bring the deserted buildings and grounds to life. With him as a guide, I think we all came away with a very sobering, moving experience that gave us a lot to reflect upon – which was what I had hoped we would experience by going there.

Respectful visit and informative tour - A trip to Dachau is historic, educational, and somber. Our tour guide James mastered the experience by balancing all three elements in a very respectful manner. Good amount of time at the memorial site for stories and reflection. Top notch tour.

James was highly... - James was highly knowledgeable and had excellent communication as well as directions leading up to the tour. Everything ran smoothly and we learned a lot. The group size was not too big and even on a rainy day, we made the most out of it.

Good but short - I enjoyed it but I thought it was a shame not to have more time to look at the pictures. I felt rushed throughout the activity unfortunately. However our guide James was very friendly.
