The entirety of the Annapurna Himal falls within the Annapurna conservation Area. From the valley base (under 1000m) to the peak of the Annapurna region, it’s possible to journey from verdant subtropics to harsh alpine ascents in merely days, observing the impact of height, landscape, and weather on life. The trails in the lower valleys often wind through expanses cleared for agriculture, intermittently straying into the remaining sheltered broadleaf woods. Further upstream, you come across the breathtaking forests of rhododendrons, their twisted pinkish arms adorned with ferns and orchids that are epiphytes. In spring, witness the flowering, varying from red to pink to white, dependent on the height. As you venture further from the persistent thunder of the river, the songs of the birdlife, and maybe the cry of a barking deer, become discernible. The dry and open coniferous forests, mostly of blue pine, can be eerily quiet except for the sound of wind rustling through the treetops.
