Highlights
  • Wat Rong Khun - After welcoming all tourists at 8:30 am, we head to “Wat Rong Khun” (White Temple, admission ticket 100 baht). This masterpiece by Ajarn Chalermchai has become a symbol of Chiang Rai Province and a national landmark. Renowned for its beauty and intricate art, it feels like stepping into another world—a stunning paradise that truly exists. To appreciate its beauty, you must see it for yourself.
  • Wat Rong Seur Ten (Blue Temple) - Wat Rong Suea Ten in Chiang Rai Province showcases the beauty of the blue temple, created with unique applied Thai art. Crafted by local artist Mr. Phutta Kabkaew, a former student of Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, the temple features shades of blue and gold, with intricate patterns, especially the Naga Staircase sculpture, which stands out for its delicate and distinct design.
  • Baan Dam Museum - Baan Dam or Baan Dam Museum (admission ticket 100 baht) is an art museum spanning over 100 rai in Nang Lae Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Rai Province. Created by national artist Thawan Duchanee, known for his painting and sculpture skills, the museum features numerous artworks. Baan Dam consists of wooden houses and uniquely shaped cement houses, mostly painted black, which is Thawan’s favorite color. Each house is adorned with beautiful patterns, wood carvings, and animal horns, such as buffalo horns, stag antlers, crocodile skins, and large shells. The black color of the houses contrasts with Wat Rong Khun, leading to a comparison of these two places as “Hell” and “Heaven.”
  • Longneck Karen Village - Visiting one of the many Karen Long Neck villages (admission ticket 300 baht) in Thailand is one of the most exotic experiences. The tradition of wearing brass rings as jewelry is more impressive in person than in books. Despite ethical concerns about these villages feeling like human zoos, the visit proved worthwhile. It’s a real-life National Geographic Magazine experience that must be seen to be believed.
  • Choui Fong Tea Plantation - “Chui Fong Tea Plantation” is a renowned tea plantation in Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai. Covering 600 rai, it is the largest tea producer in Chiang Rai. The plantation spans over 1,200 rai across two areas, including Doi Phaya Phrai in Mae Fah Luang District. The Mae Chan area features tea plantations, viewpoints, photo spots, and two cafes—Chouifong Tea Cafe 1 and Chouifong Tea Cafe 2—offering both savory and sweet dishes, with tea drinks being a must-try.
  • Golden Triangle - The Golden Triangle is an area connecting Thailand (Chiang Rai Province), Laos (Bokeo Province), and Myanmar (Tachilek, Shan State), with the Mekong River crossing the Thailand-Laos border. It is a significant economic region with beautiful scenery, especially at sunrise. Initially known as a tourist destination and border town, the Golden Triangle has grown in economic importance as a major cargo handling area in Thailand.
  • House of Opium - Learn about the history of opium cultivation and its historical significance, with displays of opium-related equipment from ancient times.

Great value for money tour - I was traveling alone and would have to pay a lot to rent a taxi. However, I found this company that offers a very good tour at a reasonable price. The guide was also very kind and I had a good experience.

Do it, it will make the most wonderful use of your time in Chiang Rai! - A friend recommended Ton for a tour in Chiang Rai and as a woman traveling solo who wanted to get out of the city for the day, I was a little nervous about hiring a stranger, but also was not interested in joining a tour group with set attractions. Ton was absolutely amazing and I am so happy that I took this day trip. He speaks English very well and also helped me practice my Thai. He even walked around the temples and different places I had chosen (one was a farm off the beaten path) with me, so it felt like having a friend to pal around with rather than simply a driver or a "tour guide". Ton is very knowledgeable about the local history and plant life, which I appreciated, and he would stop for me to take photos without my even having to ask. We stopped for lunch at a delicious, small, local khao soi restaurant which I am still craving more of. While my time in Chiang Rai was overall a great experience, my day trip with Ton was the highlight and a wonderful experience. Ton is a very warm and genuine person as well as a safe driver. If I get back here, I will definitely hire him again because he felt like an old friend from the first moment we met.
